Hidden bacteria present in our mouth can also lead to heart attacks, say experts

A new study by Tampere University researchers has uncovered a surprising link between oral health and heart disease. Scientists found DNA from common mouth bacteria, particularly viridans streptococci, in nearly half of the artery plaques examined from patients with severe atherosclerosis and sudden heart deaths. These bacteria survive inside plaques by forming biofilms, making them invisible to the immune system.
